Narrator: Oh Yea, Oh Yea, Gather
‘Round and a Fairytale you’ll hear
About a Maiden and a Prince,
A Witch, a Tower and a Tear
‘Tis the tale of Rapunzel with long and golden hair.
(Husband and wife enter, Wife is big with child)
Hush! Two strangers now approach
A child this one soon shall bear.
Wife: Husband, there upon the ground,
grow kale, lettuce and cabbage round
I want those greens, I want them now!
Husband: Then I shall get them I know how!
I’ll climb yon wall in dead of night
and steal some food without a fight.
Witch: What Fool art thou to come so near?
Husband: Why who are you that I should fear?
Witch: I am a Witch with powers great! (husband reacts)
To such as thee I shut my gate!
Husband: My wife did say that she should die
and in her grave she soon would lie
if your lettuce were not brought and
fed to her upon the spot,
she is with child and craves its taste!
Witch: Then take some with you…go make haste.
But for my kindness there be a fee, you’re child shall belong to me! (cackles madly)
Husband: To your fair terms I shall agree
(aside to audience) but that is the last you’ll see of me
Narrator: After a time a child was born
Of beauteous face and wonderous form
The Witch did come to claim the child and took her to the forest wild
there they lived there all alone a great tall tower was their home
(enter Tower with Rapunzel)
inside the which had bade her stay (Witch says to Rapunzel, “Stay”!)
and so Rapunzel did obey
where n’ere a Man did Rapunzel spy, until one day a Prince came riding by…
Prince: Oh Beautious Maid you are so fair, but tell me,
How do I get from here to there?
Rapunzel: Oh handsome Prince so tall and thin,
I have a way to let you in
Just say these words when you are near,
Pray shout them so that I might hear,
Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair
That I might climb the golden stair
(Pulls braid wig from behind tower. Prince pantomimes climbs, then ducks under or around Tower to join Rapunzel)
Narrator: The prince did penetrate the tower
A beauteous friendship soon did flower
Each sunny day and moonlight night he taught Rapunzel new delights (Pattycake)
It seemed that things would n’ere change until Rapunzel felt quite strange…
Rapunzel: I feel strange.
Mother something is not right, this tower is feeling very tight
I have been growing ever since, I started meeting with the prince!
Witch: Fool you have disobeyed me and so, off to the dessert you shall go!
There n’ere again to see the face of neither Prince nor mother in this place! Go!
(Witch pulls off braid. Rapunzel exits to get babies and water )
Narrator: The Witch dispatched Rapunzel straight and went to the tower to lie in wait
(Witch ducks down and hangs braid over tower wall)
Prince: Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair that I might climb that golden stair!
(Witch pops up, Prince screams with fear)
Witch: Your faire Rapunzel is not here! My face shall fill your heart with fear!
I shall blind you with my powers and throw you headlong from this tower!
Prince: My eyes are blinded by a Thorn! I rue the day that I was born!
Sightless I am doomed to roam, Poor and friendless far from Home!
Narrator: The Prince did wander alone and blind but no where could he comfort find, soon into a dessert did he blunder and heard a sound that made him wonder…..
Rapunzel: Waaah!
Prince: Gods Ears! Can it be? Is my Rapunzel near to me?
Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair that I might climb that golden stair!
Rapunzel: I knew one day my Prince I’d find, but oh my love you’re eyes are blind!
(Splashes cup of water into face of prince crying)
Prince: Though the Witch did take my sight, your tears have washed away the night! True love has triumphed over strife. From this day forth I call you wife!
Rapunzel: These Twins I bore you.
All alone!
A boy, a Girl. Please take us home!
Narrator: Thus was the Witches spell undone,
Her powers lost she fled the sun
To hide in misery in her tower, no mortal man beneath her power!
As night must give its place to day
So to does hatred melt away. (Witch cries, “I’m melting”! and melts)
For evil comes and evil goes,
While love eternal lives and grows
The end.
